COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been exposed to COVID 19 or diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition on the COVID 19 Notification Form (available via a link on the Student Code of Conduct COVID19 webpage). Course Information
Description Course, designed for non-science majors, that surveys topics from physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, and meteorology.
Prerequisites Basic skill competency in reading, writing, and math.
Learning Outcomes CSLO 1 - Demonstrates comprehension of content-area material (PSLO Alpha) measured by pre-test/post-test.
CSLO 2 - Determine the components of linear motion (displacement, velocity, and acceleration), and especially motion under conditions of constant acceleration. (PSLO1, 2, 3, 4) measured by Homework and Test questions.
CSLO 3 - Apply Newton's laws to physical problems including gravity (PSLO1, 2, 3) measured by Homework, and Test questions.
CSLO 4 - Solve problems involving rotational and linear motion (PSLO 1, 3) measured by Homework, and Test questions.
CSLO 5 - Apply and use energy and work concepts (PSLO 1,3) measured by Homework, and Test questions
CSLO 6 - Apply and use impulse and momentum concepts(PSLO1, 2, 3, 4) measured by Homework, and Test questions.
CSLO 7 - Analyze problems and apply the principles of physics expressed in mathematical equations(PSLO3) measured by homework.
CSLO 8 - Read text material to identify important ideas and principles, and discuss their applications in physical situations(PSLO1) measured by homework and Test questions.
CSLO 9. Work in groups to develop presentations informing the class concerning important ideas and principles and their application(PSLO 1, 2, 4) measured by group projects in class, or discussion board for online courses.
CSLO 10. Solve problems using the principles of heat and thermodynamics (PSLO 3) measured by HW and Test questions.
CSLO 11. Solve basic fluid mechanics problems (PSLO 3) measured by HW and Test questions.
CSLO 12. Define the fundamental properties of matter (PSLO Alpha) measured by pre-test/ post-test.
CSLO 13. Classify matter, compounds, and chemical reactions (PSLO 1, 3) measured by HW and Test questions
CSLO 14. Determine the basic nuclear and electronic structure of atoms (PSLO 1, 3) by HW and Test questions.
CSLO 15. Identify trends in the chemical and physical properties of the elements using the Periodic Table (PSLO 1,3) measured by embedded questions and observations.

Conceptual Physical Science by Paul Hewitt, 6th ed, Pearson Addison Wesley & The Laboratory Manual. Other editions are acceptable.

For the laboratory, you will learn more about how to take safety precautions in your daily life and in the labs, how to write a lab report, and how to use online simulators to have a better understanding of the subject and the physical world around you. You will receive instructions for the lab assignments each week.

There is at least one assignment for every chapter we cover. The assignments are weekly. The tests and HWs are online. Students may have online quizzes and reports as well at any date through the semester.

Determination of
Final Grade
Your grade, at any date, is the mean value of your graded assignment, homework, quizzes, projects/reports, and exams. Every exam is considered as two homework assignments.
Laboratory courses and their grades are independent of the lecture course.
I will furnish you with a lab report template and guidelines.
Five unexcused absences will result in an F for the final grade.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies I will not discuss your grades over the phone or by email. If you want to discuss your grades, you must come to my office, in person.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
